Abstract

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a mature T cell neoplasm caused by the retrovirus HTLV-1 (human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I). The prevalence of HTLV-1 varies according to geographic location. However, due to population migration, the incidence of ATL is increasing in non-endemic areas. Here we highlight the importance of the morphology observed in the peripheral blood smear. Characteristic features of HTLV-1 infected cells may be a clue to suspect ATL diagnosis.
